Ashley is going to Diabetes Camp

Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you know about Ashley going to camp. She is going July 6th through the 11th, 2003. She will be attending Gales Creek Camp in Oregon. She is really excited & can't wait to get there. I am very nervous even though I know it will be a great experience for her. It is so hard to hand over control of your diabetic child to strangers. Even though I have heard what a wonderful camp it is. So when Ashley get's back from camp this page will have pictures & some exerps from her journal. Hopefully that will help those who are thinking about going to camp but, are too afraid or nervous to actually go.

Ashley is back from camp. What a wonderful time she had. When I picked her up she was not ready to leave. Below I will add exerps from her daily journal so you can have an idea of all the daily activities they have to offer. Also several pictures of Ashley at camp.

For you parents I just want to tell you a few things of what goes on at camp. I was a little nervous about how well these young counselors would take care of my child. There was no need to worry. What competent & well trained counselors they have at Gales Creek Camp. While checking in Ashley was low. The counselor in charge of the low lounge took care of Ashley right away & I was impressed.
They keep the kids very active the whole time they are there. So the doctor was chasing lows with Ashley almost the whole time. She had 16 low episodes. More than any other camper. So they were constantly changing her basal rates on her pump. Since she has been home I have had to increase them because she is not that active at home.
When the kids go eat a meal they first check blood sugars & figure out how many carbs they will eat. Then they figure out how much insulin they will need & either inject or bolus right away. Then when they go through the meal line a dietician is there checking to make sure they get the right amount of carbs for the insulin they have dosed.
The counselors are always carrying diabetic supplies on them in a fanny pack. When they go hiking one of the counselors carries a backback with supplies. Ashley said they were always very careful with them when they went on hikes.
During the night the campers blood sugar is tested at 12:00 am & 3:00 am.
Ashley developed wonderful friendships with other campers as well as counselors. She loved camp & is already planning to go next year.
