Ashley  It's time to update you again on Ashley. She is now 12 years old. It is September of 2003. She is still doing wonderfully on her insulin pump. She has now been using her pump for two years this month. That is just incredible to me. The time has just flown by. We are on our second pump. The first one died a couple of months ago. Let me tell you that if you are using a insulin Pump be prepared in case it should fail. The night it failed was at about 9:00 pm. Of course no pharmacy's were open & the NPH I had was a year & a half old. So I had to go to the emergency room pharmacy to get insulin. Don't forget about them because they are always open.

We have become totally spoiled with the pump. I had forgotten how hard injections are. With the pump our control is so good & really so easy. It only took a day & a half to get a replacement pump from Minimed but, I had to keep Ashley home until it got here. I had to have her where I could easily check her blood sugar. So for the first time in a long time Ashley missed some school. But, the new pump arrived & we couldn't hook her up fast enough. We really love our pump. Ashley named this one Speedy because it got here so fast. LOL

Ashley  This summer Ashley went to Diabetes Camp for the first time. In the past I was very nervous about letting her go. It is hard to give over control of her Diabetes to strangers. But, I can't tell you how glad I am that she went. It was an incredible experience for her. She went to Gales Creek Camp in Oregon. What a beautiful place. The staff & councelors were wonderful. They are all great with the kids & really know what they are doing. Ashley can't wait to go back next year. She is already talking about becoming a camp councelor.

Also this summer we moved into a new house & new area. Ashley had to go to a new school this year. This is always a stressful thing for a diabetic family. Especially when you have just got the staff at the old school educated on how to care for the child. One thing I will tell you is that if you don't have a 504 plan in place for your child do it now. It is so important to have a plan put together for your childs diabetic needs at school. Look at my page on School help. Something that I had put in place for Ashley is a Medical Pass. The assistant principal made a card that says Medical Pass & had it laminated. This gives Ashley the ability to go to the bathroom, drinking fountain or office without embarrassment. She just shows it to the teacher. The teacher nods & she is on her way. No embarrassment because she has had to ask to use the bathroom. Most schools have a limited amount of times your child can use the bathroom. Your diabetic child should not be limited.

It amazes me how much this website has grown over this last year. There are so many people using it & I can't tell you how happy that makes me. I love hearing from everyone!!! Keep writing!!!
