Ashley  This is just an update page. Ashley is now 9 years old. She will be 10 in just two months. I can't believe that it has almost been 5 years that Ashley has been a diabetic. The time has just gone by so fast. She is really doing great. We had a check up last month. Her A1C was 7.0. This is a great number. The A1C is a blood test that measures your blood sugar levels over a 3 month period of time. If you can keep your A1C below 8.0 then your alot less likely to have complications later in life The highest Ashley's A1C has been is 7.5.

family   As a family I believe we all eat better. I lost almost 40 pounds in a year by cutting down on my carbs. It is amazing how many carbohydrates I was eating before. I started eating around the same amount of carbs as Ashley & I am eating alot healthier than I ever have. I think it is important for the whole family to change the way they eat. It helps the diabetic to not feel left out. We are on a very strict eating schedule. We always eat at the same time every day. It makes it so much easier to keep blood sugar readings under control & to measure insulin. I find that Ashley is on a 28 day cycle. Her blood sugar goes from low to high in that 28 days. So I have to watch the cycle & try to change her insulin usage to match her cycle. Not always an easy thing to do. At some point Ashley will be ready for the pump & this will be much easier to do.

Ashley Marie   As you can see Ashley is a normal child. I want to share a paper with you that she wrote for school last year.
"I am going to tell you about the time I got diabetes. It all started when my cells had a war. My bad cells won & my pancreas stopped working. I went to the hopital. My blood sugar was over one thousand. It was that high because a nurse at the doctors office said to give me gateraid. Which was bad for me. So I had alot of IV's so they could give me insulin. So I would not die. I was 5 when I got diabetes & now I am 8. I have had diabetes for almost 4 years. They are trying to find a cure for it. There are 2 types of diabetes. Diabetes 1 & Diabetes 2. I check my blood about 5 times a day. 2 times at school & 3 times at home. I take insulin 2 times a day. At school I can't eat the cafeteria food & I have to eat the food my mom packs. I get snacks to keep me up so I don't go low. I get special food but, I don't think I am special. It doesn't keep me from being a kid. They are still trying to find a cure but, they haven't yet. The end."
