Ashley  One thing I had to come to terms with was the fact that Ashley was going to need insulin injections. I was deathly afraid of needles. Any time I would have blood drawn or a shot I would have to lay down for at least 15 minutes so I wouldn't pass out. I was sure there was no way I could give her injections. My husband had no problem with this. Before we could leave the hospital one of us would have to be able to do it. At that point Jess was the one who could do it. I never thought I would be able to. They gave me an orange, some needles & a vial of saline solution to practice with. I learned how to measure insulin first & then how to inject it into the orange. It wasn't too hard on the orange. But, the idea of putting that needle into my daughter really freaked me out. So one night while Cameron was working he told me I was going to give him an injection. Of course I was mortified!! No way was I going to give him an injection & told him so. He insisted & showed such confidence in me that I was willing to try. Let me tell you that once I actually tried it that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Next he said I needed to give myself one so I would know how it felt. This made me feel a little woozy but, I started thinking about how I wanted to be in control of Ashleys diabetes. So I gave myself an injection. Well, it did hurt but, not as bad as I thought it would. So after giving myself a couple more injections I was ready to give Ashley her insulin the next morning. That was the hardest part. I didn't want to hurt my baby. Once I gave her the injection & she said it really didn't hurt that much I was sure I could give her all her injections. And I do!!

Ashley  As I told you before we were getting alot of differing information from all the different doctors. They were really confusing us. My husband was getting to the point where he was really pissed off. We just wanted to know the best way to take care of our daughter. Finally a diabetes educator came to our room. She gave us alot of information. We were so lucky to have her to talk to. Her name is Lindsey Atherton. She was wonderful. She helped us find a new doctor & got me into a diabetes education seminar.

Over the last two years we have learned so much. I can honestly say that we know more about diabetes than most doctors. We are in control of Ashleys Diabetes. We have a great doctor but, I make all the decisions regarding her care. Ashley is doing great. We are regulating her blood sugar with diet & insulin. We count her carbohydrates & adjust her insulin. I won't tell you that it is always wonderful. Because she is a kid her blood sugar goes up & down depending on what is going on in her life. Excersize, food, illness & so many other things affect her blood sugar. If she is ill we usually have to fight to keep her blood sugar up. We have had a couple times where her blood sugar was low enough that she passed out. That was so scary!!! We always carry sugar with us no matter where we go. I have learned to make sure I have snacks everywhere!! Sometimes her blood sugar will get high but, we never allow it to get high enough to make her sick.

family  I wanted to put together this website so people could learn just a little bit about diabetes. It was horrible how little I knew before Ashley was a diabetic. I think it is important that people are informed on the disease. Maybe this will happen to your child & now you will know the warning signs. I hope that it doesn't but, just know that it is not the end of the world. A person can live a happy & healthy life with diabetes.
