toothless   So they got ready to make an incision in through her groin area. They called in a surgeon. Of course you would assume he would be doing the cutting. They made my husband Jess, my son Sean & I leave the room. A couple of nurses held Ashley down while the doctor made the incision. The Surgeon, much to my surprise, stood back & watched. After the incision is made the doctor had to thread the cathedar in through the artery. I think this may have been her first time doing it. I say this because it took her more than 30 minutes to do this. I don't even know if I can describe to you the horror of that 30 minutes. Ashley's poor little body was bucking around on the bed. The nurses trying to hold her still. Even in her coma she was feeling the pain. Blood was going everywhere. I swear she lost so much blood while they were attempting this. We watched through a window in the wall. All I could do was cry & watch. The whole while the surgeon stands back & watches. Not once did he try to help. I have no idea what he was doing there in the first place. Several times I went into the room & they would force me to leave. Several times I had to go sit in a chair & stick my head between my knees to keep from passing out. My husbands face a mask of worry!!! I couldn't stop crying. I was sure she would die. All this time she needs insulin. Finally the catheder is in & the IV is attached. My daughters face is gray & her lips are gray. She looks like she is dead. I have never been so afraid in my whole life. Finally I was able to get up on the bed & hold my daughter & talk to her. She was still in the coma. It took several hours to rehydrate her before they could give her insulin. Seans aunt had come & taken him home with her. Jess & I sat there so afraid for our daughter. All we could do now is wait for the insulin to work. We started to realize how close we had come to losing her.

Eventually my husband went home to sleep & I stood watch. Waiting for her to wake up. I called everyone I could think of to let them know what was going on. Jess had called his parents in Detroit. My Mom was up visiting family in Montana. My Sister in Florida. The only family that was close by was my step-father. I sat up all night talking with the nurses & waiting. Finally very early in the morning. Sometime close to 4:00 Am she woke up. She wasn't sure where she was & didn't remember anything. I was so happy to see her looking back at me. I wept with relief!! She did not stay awake very long. But, her blood sugar had come down into the 600's.

pretty dress  We had begun a whole new life. It was really hard for me to come to grips with the fact that my daughter was a diabetic & would be for the rest of her life. I didn't know very much about the disease & everything I knew was bad.

Over the next several days I started to learn. The first thing I learned was that I couldn't count on the doctors to teach me. Every time a doctor came to see Ashley it was a different one. We never got the same doctor more than a couple of times. They all gave different instructions on how to care for her too. By the second day we were so confused we didn't know what was the truth & what was not. We did have a couple of nurses that were awesome. One was a male nurse that came on nights. His name was Cameron & he saved me.
