Ashley with flowers  I still don't know why I didn't go directly to the hospital. It was right around the corner from the Clinic. I picked her up & carried her inside. I ran through the lobby & into pediatrics. Our doctor was in a large clinic. As I ran into the reception room the receptionist actually asked me if I had checked in. That still just blows me away. Here I am running in with my daughter unconscious in my arms & she has the nerve to ask me if I checked in. I yelled, "Hell no I didn't check in!" At that point the nurse I had talked to on the phone rushed out & ushered me into a room. They put oxygen on her immediately. They tried to get an IV in her arm but, she was too dehydrated. The nurse practitioner came in & said, "Your daughter is a diabetic". I said, "No she is not a diabetic." He said, "Yes, your daughter is a diabetic." I just stood there shaking my head. He said alot more but, I have no idea what. I was utterly in shock!! I do remember him asking me if I had noticed what her breath smelled like. He had me smell it & I couldn't believe that I hadn't noticed the smell before. It smelled like fingernail polish remover. It is because she had what is called Ketone Acidosis. Her body was producing Ketones. This occurs when your body uses fat as a substitute for glucose to provide energy, which causes poisonous substances called ketones to form as a by product. I couldn't believe what he had just told me. I also had no idea that she was in a coma. Until he told me.

They called for an ambulance. They had me call my husband to tell him what was going on. I should tell you why my husband wasn't with me in the first place. My older Son Sean who was 13 at the time was having a slumber party for his birthday the night before. My husband took Sean & his friends to the Roller-skating Rink earlier in the day. At the time that I was driving to the Clinic he was picking the boys up. He had barely gotten home when I called him to tell him what was going on. At first he didn't believe it either but, then I think he was pretty shocked. He said he would meet me at the hospital.

Ashley & Sean  The ambulance came & they wheeled Ashley out to it. She kept moaning & crying out. I couldn't sit in the back with her. They made me sit up front. I remember I talked to her on the way to the hospital. Telling her not to worry & that I wouldn't leave her for a minute. The ride was very short. After all the Clinic was right around the corner from the hospital. What a very expensive ride it turned out to be! They decided against taking her into the Emergency Room & took her directly to the pediatrics wing. Since they already knew what the problem was. They wheeled her right into a room. The doctor that was on call from the Clinic was new to the area. So we didn't know her. When they checked her blood glucose it was over 1000. If you are at all familiar with a normal blood glucose reading you will know that it is between 70 & 120. Anything over 140 is considered too high. So you can see why over 1000 would be so shocking. The doctor told me before they could give her insulin they needed to rehydrate her. She was very dehydrated from the vomiting. They tried to put an IV in her hand but, couldn't get into a vein. The doctor said they would have to put an IV in through her Femoral artery. Your femoral artery is the artery that runs from your heart down to your groin & through your legs. They had to make an incision in the femoral artery & then insert a catheter. The catheter is then hooked up to an IV.
