This all started a few weeks before Ashley's sixth birthday. Ashley became ill with a flu virus. While her body was fighting the flu virus her islet cells in her pancreas were attacked. Juvenile Diabetes is now being classed as an Auto-Immune Type Disease. A sickness like the Flu makes your white blood cells attack invading organisms. For some reason if you are prone to diabetes they will also attack your islet cells. Your islet cells produce insulin. Your body needs insulin to absorb sugar. If the sugar is not absorbed your body is forced to find energy from your fat instead. Your body begins to eat itself. This can lead to a coma. Like it did with Ashley. |

We had no idea this was going on inside her body. I nursed her through the flu & thought she was fine. This is when the symptoms started. She started urinating more. We really didn't notice this until she started wetting the bed. She also started drinking more. She was thirsty all the time. We thought she was wetting the bed because she was drinking so much. I drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. I thought she was drinking more because I did. She was normally a very active child. Her energy level went way down. She also started to walk in her sleep. All of these symptoms came on very quickly. All within a few days of the other. She also started to lose weight. Especially in the last few days. One night she became ill with flu like symptoms again. The next day she went into a coma. |
