Another year has flown by. What a beautiful young woman Ashley is becoming. We have had our trials & tribulations that is for sure. Teenage life is definately not an easy one. Throw Diabetes in the mix & life becomes crazy. We are now in High School. Ashley was a Freshman this year. She is 15 years old. It has been 10 years since Ashley went into a Diabetic Coma & almost died. It amazes me that it has been that long. We have actually done very well over the years. Never has she been admitted in the hospital since that first time for a Diabetic complication. I attribute this to our vast knowledge of Diabetes & the insulin pump. If you know what your dealing with you can usually handle any situation & not feel the need to panic. Ashley's insulin pump has also been a big leg up. We find that we rarely have the huge fluctuations in blood glucose readings we did while on injections. Last year was really tough on us. I think most teenage diabetics go through times of despair. Do you remember what it was like to be a teen? I do. I can remember how hard it was to look to the future. Right now seemed like the most important time. I also remember the feelings of being the only person on the world. I can't imagine going through all that as a diabetic. I think that is why we (as parents) worry so much about them. All we can do is give them the support they need & try to get them through this difficult time in one piece. So they can make it to the time where they can look to the future. If you are a teenager I hope you know how dangerous alcohol & diabetes are. Especially for girls. We had a very scary night where Ashley had alcohol poisoning. She actually quit breathing on us twice on the way to the hospital. Her potasium level was dangerously low. Luckily we got her to the hospital on time. Her blood alcohol level was 3 times the legal limit & the doctor said this was probably elevated by her diabetes. Also females bodies do not absorb alcohol as quickly as male bodies. She was very sick for at least two days. Her blood sugar was not back to normal for at least a week. She said it was really aweful & she never wants to go through it again. I really hope she has learned something from this. Because I don't want to go through it again. Ashley is doing a lot better now. Her blood glucose levels have been very good. We just have to work on getting her through these tough teen years. Stay Healthy!! |
