Wow how the time flies!! I guess I missed updating you last year. Ashley will be 14 years old March 15th. I am just amazed that she has had diabetes now for nine years. It is hard to imagine our life before Ashley was diabetic. It just seems like we have always been dealing with this disease. Ashley is still using her insulin pump. Which she has been using for almost three years. We absolutely love it & would never go back to injections. It has really kept her A1C's pretty regular. We have been able to at least stay below 8 and have had several in the low 7's. It makes dealing with illness so much easier. A teenager faces all new challenges. Especially a Diabetic Teen. We have gone through puberty & boy was that a lot of work. From what I understand both Boys & Girls face blood sugar fluctuations during puberty. I know that when Ashley started her Menstrual Cycle it was like starting all over again. We had to totally adjust her insulin dosage. This was pretty frustrating for several months. But, now a year later we are back to normal. Well, as normal as you can get with an insulin pump. Ashley is in charge of a Diabetic Teen support group online that I set up for her on Yahoogroups. The kid's ages range from 12 to 18. Ashley loves this group of Teens & they are able to really give each other the support & understanding they all need. If you know of a teen who is interested in joining go to Diabetic Teens & sign up. Ashley starts High School next year & I am sure that will bring all new challenges. She plans on attending Diabetes Camp at Gales Creek for the third year in a row this summer. She really loves going to camp & plans to become a councelor when she is older. That is our update. Stay Healthy!!! |
